Matar Paneer

Matar Paneer (cheese & peas) curry

Matar paneer is a very popular North Indian dish prepared with paneer (cheese) and peas. It is usually served with naan, roti or chapati but goes very well with rice.

Ingredients (Serves 6)

  • 2 Tbls Mr Curry Lover paste
  • 500ml water
  • 570g frozen garden peas
  • 250g paneer
  • 4 fresh green chillies (or to taste)
  • 2 chopped large onions
  • 1 chopped medium onion for frying
  • 1tbl grated fresh ginger
  • 1tbl grated fresh garlic
  • 1/2 cup dry fenugreek leaves
  • 1tbl garam masala
  • 1tsp chilli powder
  • 1tsp salt
  • large bunch fresh coriander chopped

Instructions

  • Add the frozen peas, 2 large chopped onions, fenugreek, ginger, garlic, green chillies and water to a pan and bring to the boil then lower the heat simmer for about 20 minutes (I use a pressure cooker which reduces the cooking time)
  • Remove the pan from the heat and blend everything to a smooth sauce, add more water if required (the consistency should be like a curry sauce)
  • Chop the paneer cheese into bite size cubes and fry in a little oil until the cheese is slightly browned on each side, add the cheese to the blended peas curry
  • Fry the medium chopped onion until the onions are caramelized add to the blended peas curry
  • Fry the 2 tablespoons of Mr Curry Lover paste in a little oil to release the flavours for approx 1 minute, add a ladle or two of the curry sauce to the paste and stir
  • Add the fried paste to the pea curry and stir
  • Put the pea curry back on to a medium heat and add the chopped coriander and stir
  • Add a handful of whole frozen peas
  • Add more water if required
  • Cook for approx 5 minutes and serve with chappatis
